A 140FHC Aristocat, which
externally is an exact replica of the original XK 140fhc has been built by David
Edwards. Powered by a 4.2litre from a XJ6 Series1 through the donor 4
speed + overdrive gearbox. The XJ6 rear axle assembly had to be reduced in width
by 5" to conform to the original dimensions. The front beam could not be
used for similar reasons but the Jaguar twin wishbone arrangement was retained
but with spring over damper replacing the original design.
Many original Jaguar
XK140 components have been used in the build. Most of the bright work is either
replica or repaired / reworked originals [the Bumpers for example were repaired
from twisted accident damaged items and re-chromed]. The dashboard is veneered
MDF, using a cardboard pattern lifted from an XK140, and is 1.5" deeper to
allow part of the space frame chassis to be hidden. The original XJ6
series1 large diameter instruments have been installed, although a new loom had
to be made to allow the instrument positions to be accurate. Because of the
space frame chassis obtaining seats which could be fitted and look reasonably
authentic was difficult. Eventually the seat frames were made using units from a
Ford Escort which were severely cut and pasted. Bolt on wire wheels finish the
car with Burgundy paint job.
